Harkness Roses ‘Sweet Syrie’ Wins Glasgow Rose Trials

Sweet Syrie

A top selling variety from the new Harkness Rose Masterpiece Collection™, Sweet Syrie, has won the Golden Prize of the City of Glasgow “The Lord Provost’s Cup” after scoring the highest points at the international rose trials in 2020.

Having been inspected by a panel of experts over two summers, Sweet Syrie was assessed for its health, beauty of flower, freedom of bloom, and general effect. The rose was judged to be the best variety and was awarded the Lord Provost’s Cup after scoring 4.9 points for fragrance and an incredible 73.1 points overall, with a clear lead from the rose in second place on a score of 69.7 points.

Sweet Syrie was launched at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2016 to help raise vital funds for Barnardo’s children’s charity as part of its 150th anniversary, and to honour the work of Syrie Barnardo who worked tirelessly alongside her husband.

Aptly named, this stunning climbing rose variety has the most beautiful and sweet perfume. The flowers open in a range of pink and salmon shades to be large, often 12cm across. With a really healthy mid green leaf which is glossy and good repeat flowering through Summer and Autumn, Sweet Syrie is a great all round garden performer. It is ideal for growing on walls, fences, arches, pillars or pergolas, and is good for East, South and West facing aspects.

Speaking of the win, Managing Director Philip Harkness said: “This is a wonderful result for Sweet Syrie and we are incredibly proud of the continued awareness this rose brings of Barnardo’s charity. With its gorgeous perfume and long-lasting apricot and pink blooms, this rose is a welcome addition to any garden – not least because it has incredible disease resistance and is also very easy to grow. A superb achievement for a very special rose”.

The Sweet Syrie rose forms part of the new Harkness Rose Masterpiece Collection™ which is a harmonious blend of modern and traditional roses and showcases the very best of British rose breeding. Founded upon the company’s 140-year heritage, the collection encompasses more than 200 varieties of the finest roses from their dedicated breeding programme.
